WildHearts WolfTrek Outdoor Challenge
Adventurers from across the UK keen to ‘wolf down’ a spectacular charitable challenge will be descending upon the Scottish Highlands next week to take part in the WildHearts WolfTrek on August 7th and 8th. Uniquely, event participants will encounter the eerie and remote Dava Moor overnight, passing by the ruined castle of the medieval tyrant Alexander Stewart, ‘the Wolf of Badenoch’, who lends his name to the event. Local legend holds that ‘the Wolf’, infamous for torching the town of Forres and burning Elgin Cathedral to the ground in the 14th century, was last seen playing chess with the devil for his soul.
Organised by Highlands-based charity WildHearts, the WolfTrek will also take participants along a stunning route packed with diverse terrain, landscapes and wildlife. Hiking from sea level to the heart of the Cairngorm Mountains, the ‘WolfPack’ will set off from historic Dallas Dhu Distillery in Forres, before venturing through spectacular Highland countryside, including ancient pine forest, sparkling lochs and breath-taking mountain passes. The final stage of the trek will see participants tackle the twisting trail up Cairngorm Mountain to conclude the experience with a roaring reception at its ski station, which features the UK’s highest bar and boasts incredible views over the alpine valley below.
This August’s event is the third consecutive WolfTrek, which annually sees teams from across the UK taking part. The event has been designed to be as inclusive as possible, with a number of options available for teams to complete the route. Whilst the most adventurous will have the opportunity to tackle the whole 45-mile trek – which will involve undertaking a section of the course through the night – the challenge has also been broken down into three, 15 mile stages, which can be tackled as a team relay effort. There is also an option to sample a “bite-sized” 17 mile version of the trek by completing the Midnight March, from Forres to the shores of ghostly Lochindorb. Event organiser Mick Jackson is teams to sign up for the last remaining places. He said:
“The WolfTrek is a fantastic opportunity to have an adventure and explore the spectacular wilderness Scotland has to offer. It took us months to create the route as it does not exist on any map. As a result it is a secret that only members of the ‘WolfPack’ discover! Moreover the WolfTrek can only take place one weekend a year due to the unique conservational sensitivities of the area. Teams from across the UK travel to the Highlands to take part and we’re so proud to be able to show off this wonderful area we come home. There is still time to sign up for this years event, or join one of the support teams, and I would urge anyone interested to register now!”
WildHearts provide micro-loans and business training to people living in poverty in the developing world, enabling them to work their own way out of poverty. Once one WildHearts micro-client repays their loan, that money is then lent out to another member of their community. In this way funds raised by the WolfTrek will be re-lent for years to come, with participants continuing to help more people work their way out of poverty every year.
