China Leaders Forum 2011 will examine the challenges facing American companies that want to grow and expand their business in China, the opportunities to find Chinese investment partners that can provide a much-needed capital injection while opening the Chinese market, as well as important considerations to look at so that the high-powered Chinese rocket doesn’t crash anytime soon.
The inflation problem has been sparked sharply by China’s high-speed economic growth, especially the inflation in food. The price of food in August rose 13.4% from a year earlier with pork – the most consumed meat – jumped 52.3% in price. Yum who was trying to promote its low prices to boost traffic in China now has to struggle to deal with the higher cost in China.
With the unanticipated inflation, Yum Brands Inc. has to raise its menu prices by 2% in China, the market of whom accounts for 60% of the company’s operating profit for its fiscal third quarter. Yum’s biggest competitor – McDonald’s Corp has only 3% of global operating income comes from China. The sale of the same store of Yum rose 19% from a year earlier in the third quarter, however, the margin fell 3.9% points to 21.3% because of the rising costs. And the company has a projection of 20% for the year, a margin that that company is very confident to achieve.
