What it’s Really Like to be a Model, Direct from Models Themselves
If you’re thinking of becoming a commercial model, you might be wondering what it involves. The truth is, every assignment is different! Here Models Direct’s models offer their feedback from the different types of modelling assignments they’ve completed and what they had to do on the day.
Photographic
Photoshoots are the most common type of assignments that Models Direct supply models for, but that certainly doesn’t mean they’re all the same! Model Glenn worked on a photoshoot for a brewery that involved spending an afternoon at the pub. He explained what he got up to on the assignment.
“I was asked to fill a pub scene for the company’s shareholders annual magazines and promotional campaigns,” Glenn informed the agency. “The assignment was a great experience. I was well directed and loved working with all other models and crew!”
Fitting
Eleven-year-old Harry took part in a fitting assignment for Columbia Sportswear. “I loved the new experience and the fact that everyone was so nice to me the whole time I was there,” Harry responded in his feedback. But what was he actually asked to do? “Try on lots of different outfits,” he explained. “I then had to show them to the company’s clients to see if they like them. They also asked me for my opinion as well, whether I would buy the clothes I had tried on and if I thought they were ‘cool’.”
Production
Baby Mirah starred in a short production for The Edge Picture Group. As Mirah’s still far too young to explain what she got up to on the assignment, her mum Heather gave Models Direct her own account and she certainly makes it seem very easy!
“I was asked to put Mirah in her high chair while a scene was filmed with a woman who was meant to be her mother,” Heather explained. “Later she was to fall asleep in the woman’s arms in a darkened living room. She snuggled in almost on queue… If you think your child is suited to being a baby model or in front of a camera with lots of people then give it a go. It makes you very proud.”
Promotional
Promotional modelling is often forgotten about, but can be great fun if you have a bubbly personality and love talking to people. Models Hannah and Alena were selected to promote a new product at a tradeshow and both really enjoyed the assignment. Models Direct asked them what they got up to.
“I was asked to work in a promotional capacity,” Hannah told the modelling agency. “It involved handing out leaflets and talking to prospective customers about a new and innovative product. The enthusiasm of the team was incredible and as a result, we all had fun whilst working hard.”
Catwalk
Fashion catwalk modelling can be the toughest to get into but there are opportunities for people who don’t fit the high fashion credentials to give it a go. Model Lorna was pregnant when she was selected to walk the runway at the Bump2Baby show last year.
“We were picked out three outfits, two casual and one smart, by a Next representative,” Lorna explained. “We had a rehearsal on the catwalk so we knew the timing and when to stop and pose. The days of the live shows we had to do our quick outfit changes in between going back on stage. I feel proud and grateful of the experience as it has made me more confident.”
Hair
Hair models are used by both new hairdressers who are just starting out and, as was the case with Charlotte, more experienced stylists at hair shows. Probably the most important requirements for being a hair model are healthy hair and the willingness to have anything done to it.
“The Joico hair show was really exciting and such a great experience,” Charlotte informed Models Direct after the assignment. “I was nervous about having my hair cut and coloured at first but once they started doing it I loved what they had done. The catwalk show was amazing and such a good experience. The two days that I spent there were really good and most importantly I had fun.”
