Western U.S. and Baja Braces for a Series of Storms Next Week Advises the Swinden Group

Flooding rains, heavy snows, and high winds are on tap to cause widespread problems from Oregon down to Baja next week as a series of storms move through the western U.S.

California – The Swinden Group is advising its clients from Oregon to Baja, Mexico to prepare for some rough weather next week as a series of Pacific storms will literally plow through Oregon, California, and northern Baja, Mexico and head eastward beginning Sunday and lasting for most of the week.

Expect heavy rains below 4000 feet and heavy snows above along with strong winds.  While California and Oregon will bear the brunt of the storms, parts of Nevada, Utah, and Arizona can expect heavy precipitation also.

How Much rain and snow?

By the end of the week, rainfall amounts for coastal and valley locations could possibly range from four to eight inches, and 10 to 20 inches along the lower foothills and coastal mountains with some favored areas receiving up to 30 inches.  Even the desert regions can expect a few inches of rain.

Snowfall will generally be up to four feet of snow with some higher elevations in the Sierras receiving up to ten feet of snow by the end of next week.

High winds will accompany most of the storms.

Impacts

For the lower elevations of the coastal and valley regions – expect flooding, landslides, and debris flows in and near recent burn areas.

For the mountains – expect heavy snow that may compromise structural integrity of some buildings.

Power outages can be expected.

Travel – Expect road closures in the favored flooding areas and in the mountains, expect hazardous / dangerous winter driving conditions with whiteout conditions.  At times, travel may be impossible by ground, so check your route before departing.  Expect the normal freeway delays in the metro areas due to rain and also the usual flight delays.

Watches & Warnings have not been issued as of this Friday morning; however that may change over the weekend.  So prepare now for what could be a prolonged severe weather event.

“The storm door along the West Coast will be open next week,” says Matthew Swinden of the Swinden Group. “It looks like everyone from the coast to the mountains in Oregon, California, and Baja will experience some type of severe weather in the form of heavy rains to heavy snow.  This should prove to be a major weather event.”
