WEATHER BRIEFING
Issued from NWFC Nadi at 11.30Am Monday 14 December 2009

Category 2 Tropical Cyclone MICK had its centre located near 16 decimal 9 South Latitude and 176 decimal 9 East Longitude or about 110km North-Northwest of Nadi at 11am Fiji time today (2200UTC on 13 Dec) moving southeast 15-20km/hr.

The system has picked up slight intensity since early this morning and probably reaching its peak strength now. Average winds currently estimated to be 50 knots (95km/hr) with momentary gusts to 80 knots (150 km/hr) close to centre.

The eye of TC Mick is now passing over Yasawa & Mamanuca now and should be entering the northwestern part of Viti Levu this evening. The relative larger eye (see weather radar imagery) means it will cover a large area extending almost from Nadi to Tavua or Rakiraki. All places encountering pass of the eye should experience maximum winds in the eye wall surrounding the eye with a “lull” in between of 2-4 hours.

The cyclone should maintain its southeast track overnight and tomorrow thus affecting nearly all parts of the Fiji Group.

Rain has picked up dramatically in the western division and should spread to other parts of the country overnight and tomorrow morning.

Based on project track of TC Mick and extent of damaging gale force winds, the whole of Fiji is to kept under a Tropical Cyclone WARNING overnight and tomorrow.
_______________
* Gale force winds usually cause minor damage on land mainly to weak or temporary structures, tree branches, shallow rooted crops and loose materials.
