Upton’s ”Scarecrows” scheduled for release in May, 2009

“I wanted to do something different,” Upton said, when asked about his next book, his first horror novel.

Upton, who is legally disabled due to degenerative spinal conditions, returned to writing four years ago. “I really didn’t feel I had much choice in the decision to return to writing,” said Upton. “Suddenly I found myself with all the time in the world.” Upton also claimed that concentrating on the creative process helps him to block out the continuous pain in his spine. “I suffer a considerable amount of pain, so– guess what?– I write pretty much each and every day. It’s the best pain management I can imagine.”

Twenty-five years ago, Upton, then just fresh out of college, began to establish himself as a writer of literary fiction. “I had an agent and everything,” Upton quipped. “That was good then, although I don’t feel the intense need to obtain a agent now. The publishing industry has changed so much in the past couple decades, I really think that one day– pretty soon– agents are going to be a thing of the past. Frankly I’ve been doing pretty well on my own.”

Upton has three books out currently: “Just Plain Weird,” a young adult novel; “Mourning Doves,” a collection of literary stories; and “Four by Horror,” a short collection of creepy tales, available on Amazon Kindle for $0.99.

When asked if there will be a sequel to “Just Plain Weird,” Upton commented, “I’m not really big on sequels, but I did leave an opening for one. Whether or not I write one depends how many more e-mails and letters I get. You really to have to defer to the wants of your readers.” Upton stated further that a sequel would probably be entitled, “Downright Bizzare.”
