UK Christmas Number 1 2009 “a Two Horse Race”
The race to become the UK’s Christmas Number 1 pop song is now a question of just two choices, according to UK deals and discounts website, Deal85.com, who state:
At the start of the week, we expected Joe McElderry, who won X Factor 2009, to run away with the Christmas chart, and there was lots of interest in the Amazon UK deal for his MP3 of “The Climb” at 29p.
However, we also listed the “alternative” choice of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” and have found that to be even more popular on our website midweek!
It looks, from all download charts we’ve seen, like the RATM track is slightly ahead, but expect Geordie Joe to come back strongly now that his track is out in stores too.
This is a two horse race, but its too close to call right now!”
Following his runaway success in the X Factor, many expected Joe McElderry to lift Christmas Number One like so many X Factor winners before him, however, a concerted Facebook and social media campaign to avoid this has focussed on the 1992 track by Rage Against the Machine as an alternative for people who don’t want to see X Factor’s winner claim the Xmas spot.
Deal85.com have deals listed for both copies, which are available for download at just 29 pence each via Amazon UK – a price which has led some to question whether or not Amazon purchases are valid for the UK singles chart. However, an Amazon spokesman confirmed via their web forum that all purchases will count for the Christmas chart. Read the comment here.
