Evergreen, CO – October 13, 2009 Tropical Storm Patricia nears Baja advises The Swinden Group and heavy rains should begin to move onshore in the next couple of hours as the storm slowly weakens.
The center of Tropical Storm Patricia was located about 70 miles southeast of the southern tip of Baja California.
Patricia is moving toward the north near 7 mph. A turn toward the northwest is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the west on Wednesday or Wednesday night. On the forecast track, the center of Patricia should pass near or over the southern Baja California peninsula tonight and Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 50 mph with higher gusts. Additional weakening is expected during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles, mainly to the south of the center.
Threats & Damages from Tropical Storm Patricia
For the most part, this will be a heavy rain event for southern Baja with isolated minor to moderate flooding is expected as Patricia is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches across the extreme southern portion of Baja California. People living in and around the arroyos should be prepared to seek higher ground should the arroyos begin to flood. In addition to the minor flooding possible, power outages will also be a threat tonight and into Wednesday.
Watches & Warnings
A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula from Buenavista to Agua Blanca… including Cabo San Lucas. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area, generally within 24 hours.
A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the Baja California peninsula along the East Coast from north of Buenavista to La Paz and along the West Coast from north of Agua Blanca to Santa Fe. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area…generally within 36 hours.
