The Energy Shot Name Game – “Hours” vs. Power

By: Lila Restivska

In 2004 Living Essentials set the energy supplement world on fire with 5-Hour Energy. For the past five years they have served as the foundation for the energy shot industry, constituting more than 75% of the current $700 million market.

There is no single product other than the energy shot that better embodies the American dream. Swig two ounces of a potent liquid energy supplement and you can work all night, down another bottle and you’re able to dominate your kickboxing class, throw back one more and you’ve got enough mental focus to write that novel you’ve been talking about.

If the founding fathers had this stuff back in 1776 there would have had a man on the moon before the ink dried on the Declaration of Independence.

According to a recent report by New Nutrition Business, the energy shot market is nothing short of a bottle rocket. Revenues have already surpassed most analysts’ projections and Americans have made it clear that they want instant energy, and they want it now.

How Many Hours of Energy Do We Really Need?

With the recent rush to market of dozens of “me too” products, the name game has become nothing short of ludicrous. If five hours of energy is good, six hours must be better, correct? Six hours of energy will definitely get the job done, but with seven hours of energy it may be possible to throw a coat of wax on the family minivan before turning in for bed. By that logic, eight hours of energy would really do the trick, allowing even the most lethargic to run for public office in their spare time.

The plain truth is that energy shots boasting the mundane “more hours” approach generally contain energy blends that are equally unoriginal. Some of these energy shot manufacturers are nothing more than marketing machines that brand ready-mixed private label supplements provided by large laboratories.

The Acai Berry Pitch

Numerous other energy shots are little more than caffeine shots mixed with just enough energy supplements so that the name can be used on the label for promotional purposes. Acai Berry is probably the most widely exploited trace ingredient because of the popularity of products like Mona Vie. The anti-oxidant benefits of the Acai Berry have also been touted by nutrition expert Dr. Oz; hence energy shot companies will do anything to get Acai Berry on their label. In most cases the amount of active ingredient contained is negligible at best.

Those That Can, Do

Fortunately, the real mavericks of the energy shot industry such as 5-Hour Energy, Redline and Generator prevail. These products generally possess low amounts of caffeine and are composed of sophisticated energizers such as Beta Alanine, L-Carnitine, B-12, and L-Arginine, supplements that professional athletes and fitness professionals have used for years to gain a competitive edge during training and competition.

In fact, the formula for Generator was designed by a certified fitness trainer determined to assist other personal instructors so that they could complete seven or eight training sessions in a day without losing momentum or concentration. Before going to market, the formula was painstakingly tested on numerous fitness experts, attorneys, business professionals and people from virtually all walks of life. The result was a reliable and potent broad-spectrum energizer that delivers what many others promise, without all the hype.

In summary, read labels, sample the energy shot market and judge for yourself. Comparatively speaking, energy shots are a lot like guard dogs; the ones that work the best make the least amount of noise.
