The game of horseshoes is perhaps the most popular lawn-type sport in America today. However, one aspect of the game of horseshoes that keeps many from playing is that of the requirement that the played horseshoes must be picked up in between rounds. Many struggle through this requirement, thus further aggravating back pain perhaps requiring the game to be cut short. While playing horseshoes with his father-in-law, Inventor Michael J. Slingerland, a mechanic from Milton, Vermont, developed the idea for “The Horseshoe Retriever,” an “L”-shaped hook that is designed to pick up horseshoes while playing the game.
