HostelBookers launches 8 more languages

Hero of High Seas Adventure to Thank Captain and Crew of Norfolk-based Rescue Ship

Norfolk, VA (MMD Newswire) October 29, 2009 — For the first time since his dramatic rescue at sea, Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama will publicly thank the commanding officer and crew of the USS Bainbridge during a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia on November 19.

The ceremony will take place on the fantail of guided missile cruiser at 2 p.m. The USS Bainbridge will be moored on the downtown Norfolk waterfront.

The Maersk container ship was captured by rogue pirates off the coast of Somalia on April 8. Captain Phillips offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the safety of his crew. For four days, while the world watched, Phillips was held captive in a 25-foot lifeboat.

On Easter Sunday, April 12, Navy SEALs positioned on the fantail of the USS Bainbridge opened fire and killed three of the pirates who were holding Phillips hostage. Phillips was later rescued by the crew of the guided-missile destroyer.

On the evening of November 19, Captain Phillips will receive the inaugural National Maritime Valor Award from the Nauticus National Maritime Center.

Captain Phillips’ visit will correspond with the November 21 opening at Nauticus of the National Geographic exhibit, “Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship,” and the adjunct exhibit created by Nauticus and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum entitled, “Piracy Today: Terror on the High Seas.” “Piracy Today” features the actual lifeboat from which Captain Phillips was rescued. The lifeboat is being loaned to Nauticus and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum from the Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Florida.

Newark, NJ (MMD Newswire) October 21, 2009 — Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to debut a major solo exhibition of new monumental works by artist and emerging talent Jordan Eagles who will cover the entire 3000+ square-foot space with preserved blood in a site-specific installation titled HEMOSAPIEN.

This solo exhibition is the first public opportunity to view Eagles’ largest and most experimental blood works to date-a massive, 30-foot, multi-panel, abstract mural in which animal blood is suspended, encased and fully preserved in plexiglass and resin.

HEMOSAPIEN will also feature Eagles’ new forays into large-scale projections and color photography. Eagles utilizes overhead classroom projectors to set the entire space aglow in luminous, wall-to-wall projections of “blood light.” Life-size color photographs of nude models, onto whom he projected blood patterns, serve as documents of his photographic shoots and introduce new figurative elements that emphasize Eagles’ fascination with corporeality, mysticism, and physical and intangible spaces. The exhibition is lit to create multidimensional and translucent works that reveal the finite details and textures of the blood as well as the material’s uniquely reflective and refractive qualities.

- Tuvalu Mapping – 3300 GPS photographs of Tuvalu on Google Earth.
- Tuvalu on Photosynth – Examples of artwork made by using GPS photographs.

The purpose of project is to disclose actual information about People and Scenery in Tuvalu to the world.

It is said that Tuvalu is exposed to danger of going under water by sea level rising because of global warming. However, we suppose that it is important to understand not only the problem of global warming, but also the real situation of Tuvalu. The Internet is an effective tool for collecting information, but it was difficult to obtain information of the real situation of Tuvalu from the Internet.

Therefore, we produced this project to present the real situation of Tuvalu, to improve the interest in Tuvalu, and to receive feedback from all over the world.

New Study Comparing Hostels and Budget Accommodations Names HostelBookers as the Price Leader

London, September 29, 2009 — The study, conducted by Reed Business Insight, compared over 900 hostels worldwide, with HostelBookers offering the lowest prices in 90 per cent of cases. On average HostelBookers were found to be 5.1 per cent cheaper than Hostelworld.

For example, customers will save £112.52 with HostelBookers on a two-night stay for two people in a double en suite room at the Welcome Inn Backpackers hostel in Singapore. On average hostels in Singapore are 17 per cent cheaper with HostelBookers than Hostelworld.

This long-term art project and exhibit is Varnish’s response to the pending eminent domain demolition of their current location at 77 Natoma Street in downtown San Francisco. By continually changing the eviction/demolition date short-notice, the government agency in charge of demo (Transbay Joint Powers Authority) has blocked Varnish’s ability to schedule further art shows as they have since opening 6 ½ years ago. Instead, a fabulous group of invited artists will leave their studios in the Bay Area and beyond to create artwork on-site throughout the main gallery for this ongoing art event. The varied artwork will be created in paint, encaustic and photo-emulsion directly on the brick walls and on panels in addition to metal sculpture and kinetic art installations. Project Wrecking Ball launches with a party on Friday September 25, 7-11pm, and PWB will continue until the wrecking ball swings on Varnish Fine Art—whenever that will be!

Grizzly bear resistant food containers designed for the Tatshenshini-Alsek River

Alaska (MMD Newswire) September 10, 2009 — The Tatshenshini-Alsek river system is one of the most spectacular places on Earth. Located in the southeastern part of Alaska and extending into Canada, it is home to ancient glaciers, blue icebergs, stunning waterfalls, deep canyons, beautiful flowers, wolves, bald eagles, and grizzly bears. Together they make it a true wilderness experience for those lucky enough to travel into it. Dave Mackay fell in love with this river system in 1978 when he made his first trip down the Tatshenshini River. Mackay’s company Colorado River & Trail Expeditions has run 1-2 trips each year since that first trip and continually works to protect and preserve the Tatshenshini-Alsek through educating their guests about the importance of wilderness and continually improving equipment and techniques to minimize the impact rafting has on the area. The latest of these improvements has come in the form of designing grizzly bear resistant food containers suitable for the demands of a two- week long rafting trip.

The Tatshenshini-Alsek river system has become a more popular destination since 1978. This has led to more bear encounters each year. “In order to minimize the chance that bears associate food with people, steps had to be taken to build bear proof food containers suitable for our needs,” Mackay says. A. Grant Hutchinson, a wildlife biologist familiar with the area writes “The long term benefits of a proactive approach to minimizing the chance of bears becoming food conditioned can be significant, including ensuring human safety, enhancing bear conservation, and reducing the time and financial costs involved in dealing with food conditioned bears.”

The path to an approved grizzly bear proof container is not easy. The boxes had to be designed out of bear proof material, a 123 gallon cooler needed to fit inside them, and the boxes also needed to be able to stack inside one another for airplane transportation purposes. On a common Tatshenshini rafting trip there are four rafts, two with coolers and two with food boxes. At the conclusion of the trip the food boxes are empty. The bear proof boxes containing the coolers are loaded into the empty food boxes, conserving a lot of space, then the boxes are loaded into small planes for the flight back to Haines, Alaska.

Mackay designed his bear proof container out of 5052 H32 aluminum with a thickness of .12 in. The boxes dimensions are 22″ x 42″ x 19″. Waterman Welding in Kanab, Utah assisted with the project, fabricating a smaller prototype box to work out the kinks before building the real box. The prototype went back and forth between Mackay and Waterman multiple times before it was perfected. The hardest thing was getting the boxes to stack, but other problems that came up included making the hinges claw proof, having a drain for the cooler boxes, and making a box that was not too hard for river guides to get into.

The next step was to get the boxes approved as “bear proof.” In order to get this accomplished the boxes had to be sent to Dick Karsky of the US Forest Service in Missoula, Montana. Mr. Karsky is in charge of the approval of bear proof containers. Two tests must be passed for a box to be deemed “bear proof.” The first test is an impact test consisting of a force of 200 lb-ft applied to the top and side of the box. The second test is a live grizzly bear test in which bears attempt to get into the boxes that are baited with peanut butter and honey inside them and along the edges. Despite the bears throwing, jumping on, and clawing at the boxes, they passed the live bear test and the impact tests.

The final step was to field test the boxes. The boxes were shipped to Haines, Alaska, loaded with coolers, and put on the rafts. The only real problem that came up was undoing bolts to get into the boxes. This made the boxes harder for the guides to get to the food. This problem was remedied with the use of quick release stainless steel detent pins in the place of bolts. All of this time and work has been a small price to pay for conserving the wildness of such an incredible place. As MacHutchon writes, “short term costs to human users will be outweighed by the long-term benefits to human safety and bear conservation.” The boxes have been a great success and will help keep man’s impact on the wild to a minimum for years to come.

Hide Your Wallet: 7 Places To Avoid Driving Through This Holiday Weekend

With tight budgets, many cities have turned to traffic tickets to generate a quick influx of cash.

The National Motorists Association (www.motorists.org), a motorists’ rights organization, has identified localities focused on ticket revenue that drivers may want to avoid over Labor Day weekend.

1) Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has an extensive red-light camera system. There are over 140 cameras positioned to ticket drivers everyday. Less well-known is that their yellow lights are timed to entrap motorists with short 3.0 second intervals, a tactic guaranteed to generate thousands of red light tickets. A single camera has been known to generate $700,000 to $800,000 per year.

These short yellow lights fail to meet legitimate traffic engineering standards and lead to unneccessary red-light violations, violations that could be easily prevented simply by increasing the yellow light duration to the correct levels.

The city also sold it’s parking meters to a private company which promptly doubled the fees and plans to quadruple them within three years.

2) Chillicothe & Heath, Ohio

Both of these cities started controversial ticket camera programs. Chillicothe started collecting money from drivers without bothering to set up any kind of an appeal system — instead they referred drivers with disputed tickets to the camera manufacturer.

Heath, a city of 8,800 people, issued more than 10,000 tickets in the first three weeks of operation. Before the city dismissed many of the tickets due to public pressure, the revenue at $100 per ticket would have been $830,000, even after paying the camera company their fee.

3) Los Angeles, California

The city of Los Angeles issued over 30,000 red-light camera tickets last year. At $159 apiece, these driver penalties netted the city almost $4.8 million. However, it was later discovered that over 80% of tickets were given for right turn on red violations, which have little to no impact on traffic safety.

4) Duncanville, Texas

This city, with a population of 38,500, issued over 43,000 red-light camera tickets last year. Much like Los Angeles, the city focused on right-turn on red violations, which accounted for 85% of the tickets given out. Because of the amount of money they bring in, the mayor even went as far as arresting an alderman who disagreed with the city’s tactics.

5) Phoenix & Scottsdale, Arizona

Despite widespread criticism from citizens, these two cities — and others in Arizona — continue to relentlessly expand their speed camera networks. In 2008, Scottsdale alone issued $17 million in automated tickets. Luckily for drivers visiting from out of state, the cities rarely bother to follow up on camera based tickets issued to non-residents.

6) Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is overrun with ticket cameras. They even have ticket cameras installed on their street sweepers. The city has also been criticized for ticketing motorists in their own driveways. Over a six-year period, the District has issued more than 500,000 citations and $32 million in fines via automated tickets.

7) Entire State of Florida

When it comes to respecting drivers, the state of Florida is a disaster. The state is home to two of the most notorious speed trap cities in the country (Waldo and Lawtey) and — despite the Attorney General ruling them illegal — numerous Florida cities have jumped on to the red-light camera bandwagon. Avoid the entire state if you can.

Many of the places on this list use some form of automated enforcement, but it’s important to note that traditional enforcement techniques like speed traps (over 25,000 listed on www.speedtrap.org) are still extremely common.

According to Mr. Edwards, he argued from one person at the counter to another -”the shortness of time of my request is not my fault, neither my delayed arrival in Abu Dhabi”. “Total of three people refused to help me ( I got their names for contingency)”. Your remarkably impressive personnel should know, her “or else” worked, and I kept my promise. Instead for an opportunity to demand self gain, I witnessed an indispensable “Can-Do” work loyalty attitude, a valuable secret behind the success of any organization.
