Read&Write GOLD – helping staff at Cambridgeshire Constabulary cope with dyslexia
Cambridgeshire Constabulary is among the most improving police forces in England and Wales and is committed to making Cambridgeshire a safer place to live in, work in or visit.
The Constabulary employs around 1,400 officers and 200 Police Community Support Officers.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary recently purchased a Read&Write GOLD site licence to improve the reading and writing skills of their employees. Fran Jones, Acting Chief Inspector at Cambridgeshire Constabulary comments that “this came about as the Constabulary found that there were a number of employees who would benefit from the software, and that it also enabled the Cambridgeshire Constabulary to be more ‘disability friendly’ in terms of offering coping strategies for dyslexic employees”.
Read&Write GOLD is Texthelp’s award-winning literacy support software designed to assist employees with literacy difficulties. The software works discreetly with all mainstream Windows applications (including MS Vista), allowing users the opportunity to work in an inclusive manner alongside their colleagues.
Read&Write GOLD is easy to use and features include: Screen Masking (to tint or mask sections of the window), Texthelp Voices (new text-to-speech voices), a Translator which translates selected words into French, Spanish, German or Italian and enhanced Spelling, Dictionary & Homophone support.
Fran continues “The software is used in the Constabulary mainly for its mind mapping, spelling and grammar functions. The text-to-speech feature of the software also benefits many people as they can read their work aloud.
The software has benefited users by providing a solution which helps staff cope with literacy challenges in their work. The provision of the software by the Constabulary also provides employees with confidence in the organisation they are working for”.
