Quassy Summer Idol Contestants Will Take The Stage In July

MIDDLEBURY, Conn. – Singers from as far away as southern Massachusetts will be vying to become the first Quassy Summer Idol at Quassy Amusement Park here.

The four-night competition kicks off at 6 p.m., Thursday July 19, with upwards of two-dozen singers anticipated to take the Carousel Theatre stage in the lively event, presented by the Quassy Amusement Park and radio station WATR.

Spectators will be urged to attend to cheer on their favorite performances of the night. There is no admission fee to the amusement park, at 2132 Middlebury Road. Parking is $6. There are fees for the rides, waterpark, attractions, food and games.

“We’re extremely thrilled about bringing this event to the park,” said George Frantzis II, a Quassy owner. “We have been working with WATR for several months for come up with what we believe is a great formula for the idol competition.”

The audience also gets to chime in each evening of the live shows. An Audience Choice trophy will be presented each evening based on the crowd’s response. Performers registered to audition range from youngsters to adults.

Opening night of the Quassy Summer Idol will feature a Showtunes theme, with participants belting out their favorite songs from Broadway.

“We are really excited to team up with Quassy for this great family entertainment event,” said WATR’s Tom Chute. The radio personality will be emcee for the competition.

Those moving on to the second night of competition, Thursday, July 26, will be singing their selection of pop or rock ‘n’ roll to woo the judges.

As the nightly elimination process continues, week three, Thursday,  Aug. 2, will feature music from The Beatles.

With around 10 singers anticipated to be the finalists on Thursday, Aug. 9, they will select the song of their choice in hopes of placing in the top three.

The panel of judges will decide the first, second and third place winners following the final performances. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three with the first place performance of the evening being declared the Quassy Summer Idol.

In the event of rain, the competition will be held in the Fieldside Pavilion at Quassy Amusement Park. There is ample seating for an audience as well under the pavilion.
