PROFILE – Fergie Miller, Entrepreneur
Local entrepreneur Fergie Miller, 30, is the brains behind the new Guildfordeye.com – an online information and networking site for everyone who lives and works in Guildford.
Fergie, who grew up in Petworth, studied economics at Edinburgh University before his love of adventure sports inspired him to set up Base Camp Group, one of the first gap year travel companies to specialise in training ski and snowboard instructors.
Helping businesses and individuals to connect with each other has been one of the main drivers of his business success. After training individuals to ski and snowboard, Fergie then went on to help them find employment in ski schools.
Long before social networking and the popularity of Facebook became what it is today, Fergie was developing his internet and e-commerce skills to research and develop the concept behind Guildfordeye.com – a powerful interactive website designed to bridge the gaps in online services and foster closer links within the local community at all levels.
“This is social networking at a community level”, says Fergie. “Whether you want to find temporary support / fill temporary vacancies in your business, find out when Guildford Flames are next playing at home, or simply add your views on the latest development proposals for the town centre, Guildfordeye.com allows you to interact with the local community very easily. It’s a one stop-shop social networking site for everyone.”
As an internet entrepreneur, Fergie knows that the secret to future success is staying ahead of the game and using the power of the web to introduce new services before people even know they need them. Undaunted by the dot.com failures at the turn of the millennium, Fergie is constantly looking for ways he can use the internet to make people’s lives easier without losing the adventurous spirit of his earlier years.
