Powerful Tropical Cyclone Oli is a near miss to Bora Bora

Bora Bora – Tropical Cyclone Oli intensified over the last 12 hours into a powerful cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph making it a category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale of 1 to 5. As of 1500 GMT, Oli was located 135 nautical miles south-southwest of Bora Bora and tracking away from Bora Bora and Tahiti to the southeast.

“For the most part, Bora Bora has been spared a direct hit and this storm is mostly a heavy rain event with near tropical storm force winds,” explains Matthew Swinden, whose firm advises corporations and travelers on business and travel impacting severe weather events. “Residents and tourist on Bora Bora will endure approximately 12 hours over additional heavy rains as Oli moves away.”

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Oli will further intensify over the next 12 to 24 hours before beginning to weaken. The main impact for the Tahiti and Bora Bora will be heavy rains and high surf will pund the coastline over the next couple of days.
