When the cherished number plate CD 1 was donated to Brighton and Hove City Council for the mayor’s car, who would have thought that some thirty years later this number plate would be causing a rift between the two main political parties running the local council, but it is.

As with all councils around the UK, saving money is their priority and with the number plate industry booming, what easier way could there be than to sell CD 1 for its estimated £150,000 value? Well it is not as easy that.

According to the cabinet member for finance, Jason Kitcat, he feels that selling CD 1 is the right thing to do; “Through auctioning the mayoral number plates we will be creating significant new funding sources for the third sector in this city.”

However, according to the Labour Councillor Brian Fitch, there is a difference of opinion between the main parties as to where additional savings can come from; “The CD1 plate is part of our history. It’s like selling off the family silver. It is only a one-off saving so wouldn’t be producing £150,000 of savings every year. With that in mind I don’t think the potential damage to our civic pride is worthwhile.
