ŒCOCW Charges Arizona Immigration Law as Anti-Humanitarian
The Œcumenical Canonical Orthodox Church Worldwide (ŒCOCW) charges that the new Arizona Immigration Law lacks the humanitarian aspect historically present in U.S. immigration policies and practices over the past 100 years. The ŒCOCW supports the right of U.S. Border States such as Arizona to strive for the acquisition and maintenance of secure borders. However, the Arizona law was clearly created to address one particular ethnic population and recalls the negative attitude expressed in the 1800s in response to the large influx of Irish and Italian immigrants, who like the current target immigrant population, were largely common laborers responding to the enticement of honest and respectable employment opportunities.
It is important to remember the violence and pain visited upon the well meaning Irish and Italian immigrants, by groups opposed to traditional American humanitarian assistance and failure to view America as a land of immigrants. Therefore, targeting a specific population for possible abuse, ridicule and violence is on its face immoral and unjust, which defies America as the home of the free and land of the brave.
The ŒCOCW challenges Arizona and all Americans to consider the question of Abel in Genesis 4:9 as to whether or not he was his brother’s keeper. How should morally upright and respectably ethical Americans in general, and Arizonians in particular, answer this question?
