Hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of motor insurance claims have been made in recent months due to Scottish Police officers who have crashed their vehicles into walls, trees, and parked cars.

Bizarrely it was revealed that only a small percentage of these motor insurance claims were made because of accidents occurring during a 999 call. 1,216 road accidents involving Scotland’s police force were recorded between January 1st 2008 and January 25th 2010.

A couple of examples have been presented, with one police officer causing £229 worth of damage reversing into an overhanging branch. Meanwhile in August of the same year, another police officer inexplicably struck and damaged a barrier, creating a further motor insurance claim for £404.

Scotland’s largest police force, Strathclyde Police, predicts that around £700,000 worth of repairs have been made to police vehicles that have been in accidents NOT involving third party vehicles or pedestrians.

What this staggering statistic suggests is that no matter how experienced a driver you are, anyone is liable to cause a road traffic incident.
