Models Direct Guide: What to Remember When Putting Together a Vintage Outfit
Models Direct has already offered advice on where to pick up some vintage bargains. Now it’s time to work out what to buy and how to wear it! Here are some useful tips to remember when putting together a vintage outfit.
Clothing is more than the label. Yes, you can find some great vintage designer clothing but this not an excuse to buy every designer piece you see, especially if you don’t actually like the garment.
“Designer labels can be collectable,” says experienced vintage shopper Susan Muncey. “But I think it’s much more important that a piece has its own timeless style and is usable, or wearable.”
Fantastic fabric. When you’re shopping for vintage clothing, look out for leather, silk, linen and velvet garments. These are the key timeless fabrics to buy. You’ll also find pieces with hand-sewn embellishments. They may be more expensive, but at least you know you’re getting something original.
Quality. When you’re buying, check the garments thoroughly for rips and holes in the fabric, especially along the seams. Hold the fabric up to a light to see if the material is worn out. Accept that there will be items that are beyond repair; leave them in the shop and hope that you’ll find something similar in a better state!
How to wear vintage. Models Direct advises that you don’t wear an outfit entirely composed of vintage clothing. Mix and match it with modern pieces and it will give you a fashion edge. Loads of celebrities are mixing modern and vintage clothing, so follow in their fashionable direction and find a star style that you’d like to emulate.
Do some research. There are plenty of books available that are full of hints and tips to help with your vintage shopping. And, of course, there’s loads of information that can be found on the internet.
