Models Direct Guide to Performing Well at Singing Auditions

March 17, 2010 | Author: | Posted in Performing Arts

When it comes to singing auditions, it’s obviously important that you have a great voice, but this won’t be enough to get you the part. You also need to show that you’re confident and can perform. Here, Models Direct offer tips on how to perform well when auditioning for a singing role.

1.    Research
what exactly it is you’re auditioning for. Is it for a part in the latest pop group? An entertainer at a holiday park? Or maybe a role in a musical? Whatever it is you need to make sure you choose an audition piece that reflects the role that you’re going for. For example, if it’s a pop group, choose a song that is currently popular. You should also find out if you’re singing a cappella or if you will need to bring either a backing track or sheet music.

2.    Choose a song that really shows off your style of voice and your vocal range. You shouldn’t choose a song that doesn’t fit the pitch of your voice or base your choice on what’s in the charts.

3.    Be prepared to sing more than one song. You should have at least on upbeat song and one ballad in your repertoire to show how you perform different styles of music. If you know you will be given the opportunity to perform two songs, Models Direct advise that you start off with the more upbeat song, especially if you’re nervous. Nerves will show more in ballads so use the up-tempo song to warm up your voice and to help you become more confident with the panel.

4.    Don’t let other people at the audition distract or discourage you from what you’re doing. While it can be good to talk to other people at auditions Models Direct suggest you focus on vocal warm ups and practising your songs.

5.    Perform as if you are on stage in front of a real audience rather than treating the audition as a rehearsal. The audition panel want to be able to see what you’ll be like as a finished product.

6.    Take any criticism gracefully and don’t be offended if you’re cut off quickly after you start singing. The ‘judges’ will most likely know whether you are what they’re looking for within just a few seconds of starting. They could also stop you to offer you some suggestions. Make sure you listen to them and take them on board; they want to see how well you take direction as a performer. Use any criticism you are given to improve on your performance for next time. You won’t be given every role that you audition for but you can use the experience as practice.

7.    When the audition is over politely thank the panel for their time, leave the room and then try to forget about it. You may think that an audition has gone badly when in reality you have done really well. Try not to dwell on unsuccessful auditions but instead learn from them and move on to the next.
