Models Direct Guide to Dealing with Audition Rejection
It may not be nice to think about but as an actor you will probably be refused many of the roles you audition for, especially as a new artist. This should not deter you from trying to achieve your ambition but it may help to find a positive way of dealing with any rejections. Here are some of Models Direct’s top tips.
• First of all, put the audition in perspective. Getting any role can be difficult when you are up against tens, hundreds or even thousands of other people. Directors are not only looking for talent. They are looking for someone who fits the role in terms of height, weight and the overall look – characteristics you may not have any control over.
• Although it is good not to dwell on auditions and move on to the next, you should spend a little time trying to work out what went wrong. By being brutally honest with yourself about your performance you may be able to see what it is you need to improve on.
• If you are lucky and auditioning for a director who is willing to spare you a few minutes of their busy schedule, ask them respectfully for some feedback on your audition. The key word is respectfully; don’t burst into a fit of “why didn’t you cast me?!” Remember to thank them for the feedback: ultimately they are helping you and potentially improving your chances of being cast at your next audition.
• Don’t lie to yourself and say that it was the best you could do if it wasn’t. If there are areas you need to improve on, seek some advice or go on a course to brush up on your skills. If you are sure you couldn’t have performed any better, now’s the time to forget about the audition and think positively about your next.
• Models Direct think it’s good to find a healthy and positive way of dealing with the frustration of being rejected. It could be by visiting the gym, jogging, seeing friends or starting a new hobby – anything that will boost your mood and help you forget about the audition.
