Models Direct Guide to Becoming an Extra: Part Two
So, you’ve read about what it takes to be an extra or walk on in films and TV in the first part of Models Direct’s guide, now find out what you need to do to make your dreams come true in part two.
Do I need to find an agent? There are plenty of casting agencies for extras, many of which will charge you a small fee, either upfront or out of the payment you receive for your first job. These agencies will be able to inform you of, and put you forward for, upcoming productions that are looking for extras, finding opportunities that are otherwise not available for non-members. Some larger agencies only take on new applicants once a year.
However, it is also possible to go it alone by searching the internet, newspapers or magazines for open castings. You could consider turning up to sets when you know something is being filmed in your area, although Models Direct don’t believe this to be the most successful method. If going it alone you should keep up-to-date with what productions are about to be filmed.
What will the agency need? The agency will need your CV and a clear photo. They will want to know more about your look including height, weight, eye colour and hair colour. Agencies will also want to know about your experience of working in performance roles, whether it’s as an extra, acting, dancing or modelling, as well as any extra skills.
What do extras look like? As extras are used to play crowds of people there is no specific ‘look’ that an extra requires – unlike in certain areas of modelling. Having a generic look may mean you get offered parts more frequently whereas if you have a more distinctive look you may find yourself in a more interesting, or even a walk-on, part.
How much do extras earn? It depends what company you’re working for as rates vary between them but you can expect to earn around £70 a day, and more if you have a walk-on part. You will most likely have food supplied when you’re working, but expect to be last in the pecking order for meals!
What will I need to take with me? Something to keep you entertained! It will most likely be a very long day with lots of waiting around, so take along a book, iPod or handheld games console to prevent boredom. You should also bring some warm clothes to keep you cosy if it’s likely you’ll be outside and a snack to keep your stomach from rumbling. You should also take a pen with you as there’s likely to be some paperwork for you to fill out. And what shouldn’t you take? Don’t bring your camera, as you won’t be allowed to take any photos.
Final tips.
• Stay cheerful, friendly and cooperative throughout the day.
• Keep quiet and still when filming is taking place and don’t distract the actors, that includes keeping out of their eyeline when they’re performing!
• Have fun!
