Models Direct Explains What Not To Do When Creating Your Portfolio
So, you’ve decided you want to follow your dream of modelling; now you just have to find a decent agency and put a portfolio together. No doubt you’ve found information about how to get great photos. To help you get it right first time, we’ve put together a list of modelling agencies’ pet peeves when it comes to portfolio photos.
With most reputable modelling agencies you should be able to go to them with your photos directly, rather than being obliged to use a professional photographer. However, you do need ensure you give them some high-quality shots. Here are some tips on what to avoid.
• Poor cropping. Make sure that you fill the frame, especially with headshots. Remember, it is likely that potential clients will only see a small picture when trying to find models, especially with online portfolios, so make the most of the space you have.
• Unprofessional-looking shots. You might not need to go to a professional studio, but your photos should still be of a good quality. Even if it’s only a small photo that will be seen on websites, it still needs to be clear and in focus when enlarged. You can use a regular digital camera at home, but definitely not a webcam and preferably not a phone camera.
• Group or couple shots. Unless you are identical twins, it should only be you in the frame. You also shouldn’t have any pets or props in your photos. Make sure you include a headshot in which your face is directly facing the camera and that nothing is obstructing your face.
• Background clutter. Modelling agencies want to see what you look like, not what your kitchen/bedroom/garden looks like! Also, remember to keep your look simple: keep the outfit plain and don’t put on lots of make-up. You’ll get to dress up if you’re selected for modelling work!
• Inappropriately edited photos. Don’t include any text in your photos, or put a border around them. You shouldn’t edit your photo to the point where it doesn’t look like you, but the photos need to be well lit with good contrast – and without those evil-looking red eyes!
Now you know what to avoid, it’s time to find someone to take the photos and submit them to an agency. You might like to consider one of Europe’s top modelling agencies, Models Direct!
