For models going out on their first few assignments or castings (if they’re not modelling a company’s own clothes) it can be hard to know what to wear. Here, Models Direct offer a few tips to help you decide.

If you’re attending a photoshoot to start or build your portfolio you’ll be able to take whatever clothes you like. Remember to take a variety of outfits in different styles that reflect what sort of modelling you want to get into.

Clothes should fit well and show off your best features. Make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing because it will come across in the photos if you’re not.

Check with friends and family what colours suit your skin tone, hair colour and what will bring out the colour of your eyes. Similarly, find out what styles of clothes suit you. Models Direct advises that you opt for block colours rather than busy patterns, especially if the photos are being used to promote yourself to agencies.

To add some interest and detail you might want to choose some accessories such as jewellery or scarves. Just make sure that they compliment your outfit rather than draw attention away from the focus of the photos – you!

If you’re required to bring your own outfits to a paid modelling assignment the client should give you some ideas on what sort of thing you should wear. Make sure you take lots of different outfits that are suitable for the assignment.
