There is plenty of advice out there for teenage girls and women about starting a modelling career, but how about the boys? Here are modelling agency Models Direct’s top tips for male models.

Practice makes perfect. Models Direct advise that any model looks through magazines or catalogues to look for poses, no matter what type of modelling you’re considering. You can then practise these poses and develop them into your own style. This means that when the time comes for a photoshoot, you’ll be fully prepared.

Similarly, practise different facial expressions. It’s good to portray different emotions in your photos, so practise in the mirror and learn exactly how each expression feels so you get the perfect portrait on assignments.

Go shopping! Men tend to own fewer clothes and accessories than women, but you may need to change this. For commercial modelling assignments you may have to take along several of your own outfits, so make sure you have plenty to choose from. Go for stylish wardrobe staples, make sure your shoes are clean and tidy and remember you can alter outfits with accessories such as belts and scarves.

Don’t give up the day job. Unless you’re a very successful high fashion model it’s unlikely that you’ll earn enough to support yourself on modelling alone. However, modelling can be a fun hobby that earns you some extra cash alongside another job. Just remember that assignments can come up at short notice and it helps to be flexible concerning hours that you’re available.

A great body? Commercial modelling agencies such as Models Direct take on models of all shapes and sizes but it’s important to stay healthy. Eating a balanced diet, avoiding excessive alcohol and stopping smoking will help keep your skin clear and fresh.

Don’t take offence. Always remember there are thousands of models out there and clients often only need a small number of models, so there is no guarantee that you’ll receive work when signing with a commercial agency such as Models Direct.
