Major Winter Storm Expected to Pound North Carolina to New England this Weekend Advises the Swinden Group
Eastern U.S. – The Swinden Group is advising its clients from South Carolina to New England that this weekend may be the weekend to stay home to wrap presents, watch football, and / or read a book next to the fireplace should the power go out as a powerful low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico moves up the eastern coast.
A deepening low pressure is forecast to track from the Gulf of Mexico today northeast along the South Carolina coast tonight, then up the eastern seaboard late Saturday.
“This is the preferred track for winter storms over the Mid-Atlantic States into New England,” says Matthew Swinden of the Swinden Group. “Snow is expected over North Carolina this afternoon and spreading northward into Virginia and Maryland tonight and then New York and New England Saturday.”
Expect general snowfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches with some areas approaching a foot or more. Along the snow / rain line, expect freezing rain to occur with up to a quarter inch – especially in the southern region of this winter storm.
Bad News / Good News
“This will be a high impact storm affecting many locations from North Carolina to New England including most of the major metro areas,” explains Swinden. “Travel both on the ground and in the air will be a mess to say the least. The good news is the bulk of this storm will hit over the weekend, so stay home next to the fireplace.”
Expect this storm to affect most of Northeastern U.S. on Sunday.
Near Blizzard Conditions are Expected
Combined with gusty winds, near zero visibility may occur in some places making traveling dangerous or impossible. While the storm track is still a bit uncertain, plan for the worse. The main threat will be hazardous / dangerous / impossible travel conditions Friday night to Sunday. Expect road and highway closures due to conditions and accidents along with isolated power outages as some areas. Widespread flight delays may affect most of the U.S. flight system. Check with your airline prior to flying anywhere in the U.S.
