Hippy Runs – The Next Big Health & Fitness Craze?

May 28, 2009 | Author: | Posted in Lifestyle, Sport

So many health and fitness crazes these days seem to start with a product – think Dyno Bands, Power Plates, and those little trampolines and big inflatable balls we all bought. But one man, Steve Haywood, a personal trainer from Yorkshire, in the UK, is looking to change all of that with his new idea, which he is calling “Hippy Runs”.

Hippy Runs are where you go for a jog or run without any technology whatsoever – harking back to the hippy movement of the 1960s when Steve first started his own running – Steve explains:

I have friends who feel naked if they go for a run without enough technology to give them every statistic you can think of and they will tell you I have started working on them to try a Hippy run.

So what, exactly is a Hippy Run?

Think of one of your favourite runs, preferably through a park or in the countryside and run it without one gadget attached to your person, not even a watch… Learn to go on how you feel, listen to your body, listen to the wind in the trees, slow down to take in a particularly nice view, say hello to people and relish the response (unless they couldn’t hear you cos they had earphones plugged in).

Steve does advocate the use of technology in order to track long term fitness goals, however, he explains that running for pleasure should be a simple thing: refreshing news in these troubled financial times. He also knows that running without technology is a big step for some people in today’s world:

I am only suggesting say one Hippy run a week, try it, if you don’t like it go back to being plugged in. But you may just start to experience the wonderful freedom that running can give. If you keep going long enough there may be a chance that you reach a higher state of mind where all you can hear is “The Hippy Hippy Shake”

So, what should those interested in doing a Hippy Run do? Put some shorts on, a pair of suitable trainers, and step out of the door. Then just put one foot in front of the other!
