Going Green With Pet Parrots

With all the talk of going green, it’s no surprise to hear that some businesses are becoming more eco friendly, but you might find it a little more surprising to hear how some young groups of people are “going green” with their pet parrots.
“We call it Freestyle Flying” says , co-owner of .com; an online source for learning how to train parrots. “We literally train our birds for three months, then take them outside and let ‘em go! Of course, they come back 100% of the time since that’s what their trained to do.”
In captivity, pet parrots run the risk of dying of heart disease, kidney failure, respiratory disease, etc. In fact, parrots’ respiratory systems don’t even function at full capacity unless they are in flight. In addition, their ho-hum lifestyle of sitting in a cage typically turns into feather plucking, screaming habits, and vicious biting – none of which are found to take place in their natural environment.
“It’s the best thing that we can do for parrots. We give them mentally enriching games (training), and allow them to just be parrots,” says . “Essentially, they get to live with us by choice, and not by force. I mean face it, if they don’t like us, they’d fly off. Not only would that be illegal and irresponsible, but what a loss of money, time, and companionship!”
Every 6 months, the Freestyle Flyer’s Club™ gets together and flies their parrots at various exotic locations around the U.S. Their most recent trip took them here to Moab, where they have been coming every 6 months, in addition to other locations like Page, Sedona, Escalante, etc.
“With everyone going green, we figured it’d only be fair to let our birds live a more green life, by just allowing them the freedom of flight. This is dangerous if not trained by a professional trainer, and it is not advised for anyone to do without proper training,” Womach comments. “There’s no greater feeling than to watch a learn how to fly, and have formed enough trust with it that you can release it over a canyon, watch it dive down, and come back to your outstretched hand simply because he wants to.”
