EU Commission’s Director General For Innovation And Research Visits Cyprus

Director-General of Research and Innovation at the European Commission, Robert-Jan Smits, paid Cyprus an official visit between 18-19 January.

According to an official press release, the purpose of Smits` visit was to be briefed on the Cypriot government`s preparations ahead of the assumption of the presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2012 and present the Commission`s proposal on the new financial program for research and innovation, called “Horizon 2020“. The program will be implemented between 2014-2020.

The European official presented the Commission` proposal at a seminar organised by the Planning Bureau. The seminar was attended by more than 80 delegates from the research and academic community, the business community as well as from the House of Representatives.

The European program «Horizon 2020» will be negotiated at the Council during Cyprus` presidency. Responsible for the negotiation will be the Planning Bureau and the Minister of Health, who will preside over the Competitiveness Council of the EU for research and innovation issues.CNA
