Enterprise SMS Authentication Ready for Prime Time
MELBOURNE, VIC: 19 November, 2009 – The traditional cost of deploying and managing token-based authentication systems is a significant expense for many businesses. And with this firmly in mind, local security VAR CoreSight formed an alliance with distributor 2nd Phase to review the current state of play and look for where cost and convenience improvements could be made.
The result of this quest is a partnership arrangement with UK-based SMS authentication specialists SecurEnvoy. The vendor’s key product is SecurAccess, an SMS authentication system that excellent ROI compared with legacy hardware token solutions. SecurEnvoy customers have realised savings of up to 70% compared to their previous token-based systems, purely on licensing costs. The company also points out that management savings are significant as well, with easier administration and a preferred experience for end users. And considerations such as distribution and replacement of tokens disappear, along with those costs.
It appears there are several real advantages in adopting the mobile phone as a method for providing strong authentication. Campbell Bradford, founder at 2nd Phase, said, “Because software isn’t required on the phone, costly testing, support and training issues are largely eliminated. This becomes even more important as phone interfaces are constantly changing with each new model.”
When asked why SecurAccess had been so popular with clients and their end users, Steve Watts, co-founder at SecurEnvoy, explained, “With worker mobility continuing to increase, we’ve developed a system that delivers workers the flexibility they crave but without compromising security. Tokens can be lost, damaged – and they need to be managed by IT. Everyone carries a mobile with them all of the time, so it’s a much easier and safer option.”
He continued to provide examples of organisations that are using SecurAccess in various regions, including ING, Caterpillar, Logica, Scania, T-Mobile, AXA and PWC.
Watts also noted a different aspect of the attraction of SMS authentication. He said, “IT departments need to be aware that authentication tokens are far from green. We believe that it’s important that organisations evaluate the security options carefully, so as not to waste time and money on technology that will increase their carbon footprint.”
Scott Jackson of CoreSight focused on SMS deliverability as a key area. Jackson explained, “A key requirement we needed to see is the capability to address potential issues around network coverage and delivery delays. We’re impressed that the SecurAccess product has been specifically built to prevent these potential drawbacks.”
SecurAccess is available to try or buy today. Onsite and web demonstrations are also available now through local partners CoreSight. To request an evaluation, arrange a quote tailored to your organisation, or obtain further information; contact CoreSight using the details below.
