One of the largest digital marketing agencies in the UK is amazed and saddened that modern forms of communication have been blamed for making the riots worse.
Cayenne Red, which is based in Reading and handles clients across the UK, mainland Europe and Australia, believes that social media has been wrongly blamed for aiding rioters throughout London and other Cities in the country.
Media reports highlighted how social network sites were being used to communicate and in some cases direct rioters. Eventually it was reported that the makers of the BlackBerry range of smartphone devices – Research in Motion – were considering helping police with identifying message sent on their instant messaging service: BBM. It’s said that police were able to identify and track Facebook posts and Tweets, but were unable to do the same with BBM.
Mr Duncan Cumming, CEO of Cayenne Red, said:
“The hysteria showed by some of the tabloids towards rioters using social network sites to communicate with each other was bizarre. To say that the rioting and looting was made possible by modern social network platforms is like blaming news organisations for covering the riots. Facebook, Twitter and BBM are forms of communication. They cannot be blamed for making matters worse. The people causing the trouble are at fault, not the medium itself.
“And it was great to see Facebook and Twitter being used by those intent on cleaning up behind the rioters, which proves they are vehicles for positive actions, not just bad.”
Cayenne Red provides digital marketing services which include SEO, PPC, SM, Online PR and Website Design.
