The Devon Beekeepers Association (DBKA) is a not-for-profit organisation run on a voluntary basis for the benefit of bees and beekeepers. In order to ensure that information on their website www.devonbeekeepers.org.uk can be accessed by the widest possible readership, Devon Beekeepers have speech enabled their website with BrowseAloud.

BrowseAloud is a text-to-speech solution that reads website content aloud and highlights each word as it is spoken. This audio-visual reinforcement can improve online reading and increase word recognition. This means that people with literacy difficulties, dyslexia or mild visual impairments can all have equal access to the online information.

Nigel Lawrance, Webmaster for Devon Beekeepers comments, “One of the intriguing aspects of working with beekeepers is how diverse they are; they come from all walks of life to share with and support each other in the craft. The Association with its eleven branches is run entirely by volunteers. Extending our reach in this way fits well with our aspirations.”

Nigel continues, “As our aim is to promote beekeeping and educate the public, it became clear that there could be a large number of people who might benefit by using BrowseAloud on our website, especially if our existing membership is representative of the wider community. As we have a growing international readership, the new translation tool will certainly aid those who speak English as a second language.”

The latest version of BrowseAloud has some exciting new features such as dual-colour highlighting, text magnification, a dictionary, a translator, an MP3 maker and a screen masking tool. All features and options are accessed from an easy to use, floating toolbar.
