Cyprus Will Have A Solid Waste Management System In Place By 2015

By 2015 Cyprus will own a comprehensive solid waste management system, that will include full restoration of landfill sites, full recovery of materials and energy production processes, Minister of Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis announced Friday, at a press conference.

According to the Minister, in 2012 the Ministry’s strategy on comprehensive management of solid waste will enter its final implementation phase, while construction of infrastructure projects will begin the year after.

Among the infrastructure projects are the recycling sites in Nicosia and Limassol, the solid waste transit stations, rehabilitation of landfill sites in the districts of Paphos, Larnaca and Famagusta, creation of green point networks all over the island and aggregate recycling facilities. At the same time the state will proceed with the creation of the combustion plant for energy production and the upgrading of Paphos sanitary landfill to an integrated solid waste management unit.CNA
