The Indian lighting industry has been growing steadily at the rate of 10 to 12% over the last few years and is worth Rs. 7994 Crores as of 2010.
Over the last few years ELCOMA has earned the reputation of being the only recognized apex body representing the Lighting Industry in India. The association continued to build healthy relationships with various government departments and states for reduction of taxes and duty on energy saving products. The association at the moment has shown serious concern about mercury in lamps and together with the Government has financed a Master Plan Study by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The body also promotes LED for a clean environment. ELCOMA continues to interact with various International Lighting Councils to build healthy relationships.
According to Mr. CGS Mani, “I believe much can be done to take this industry forward by addressing issues of national importance like energy saving initiatives, promoting and enabling platforms for resurgence of environment friendly product categories like LED, besides safe disposal of mercury containing lamps.”
He further added, “Of late the industry is also facing unimaginable increase in cost for Triband Phosphorous powder which is a main ingredient in many energy saving products like CFLs and T5 lamps.
