A Major Exhibition of New Blood Works
October 23 – December 12, 2009
Aljira, a Center For Contemporary Art
Preview: Friday, October 23, 2009, 6-9pm
Artist’s Reception: Saturday, November 7, 2009, 4-8pm
Newark, NJ (MMD Newswire) October 21, 2009 — Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to debut a major solo exhibition of new monumental works by artist and emerging talent Jordan Eagles who will cover the entire 3000+ square-foot space with preserved blood in a site-specific installation titled HEMOSAPIEN.
This solo exhibition is the first public opportunity to view Eagles’ largest and most experimental blood works to date-a massive, 30-foot, multi-panel, abstract mural in which animal blood is suspended, encased and fully preserved in plexiglass and resin.
HEMOSAPIEN will also feature Eagles’ new forays into large-scale projections and color photography. Eagles utilizes overhead classroom projectors to set the entire space aglow in luminous, wall-to-wall projections of “blood light.” Life-size color photographs of nude models, onto whom he projected blood patterns, serve as documents of his photographic shoots and introduce new figurative elements that emphasize Eagles’ fascination with corporeality, mysticism, and physical and intangible spaces. The exhibition is lit to create multidimensional and translucent works that reveal the finite details and textures of the blood as well as the material’s uniquely reflective and refractive qualities.

“Eagles is at an exciting stage in his artistic career, especially with his innovative, self-invented process. He continues to push the spectrum of what can be achieved with the combination of blood and light, and by introducing new content that had not been explicit in his earlier works, ” says Director of Exhibitions and Programs Edwin Ramoran who curated this exhibition.
About the Artist
Born in 1977, Jordan Eagles received a BA from New York University. His works have been exhibited internationally in venues such as The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Real Art Ways, Center for Visual Arts of New Jersey, The Bronfman Center Gallery at New York University, Paul Robeson Gallery at Rutgers University, Mark Wolfe Contemporary, Krause Gallery, and Jacob | Karpio Galleria; and numerous art fairs including SCOPE, London Art Fair, Los Angeles Art Show, and Aqua Art Miami, Eagles’ works are included in The Bohlen Collection and The Prudential Center collection. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Village Voice, L’Uomo Vogue, Architectural Digest Italy, New York Magazine, MSNBC, NY Post’s Page 6, and FOX News. Recently, the producers of the upcoming Disney film “When in Rome” acquired Eagles’ work to use in their film. His images are also used in Richard Move’s film “Blood Works” on the life of Ana Mendieta, and a reproduction of his work is currently being used as a massive 50-foot stage curtain for Alice Cooper’s international rock concert. www.jordaneagles.com

(MMD Newswire) October 14, 2009 — The 137 years old Rumbach Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary gives home for a very special the artwork exhibition which honors Anne Frank’s 80th birthday.
“Anne Frank became famous due to her diary, written in Dutch, in which despite her young age, she describes in a sensitive, acute and mature way, what she, her family and their friends went through in their hiding place from the Nazis. Anne Frank is the Shoah’s ‘most famous victim’ as well as ‘the most famous child of the twentieth century’, and her face, with the sad shy smile is one of the icons from this time” – says Peter Wilhelm initiator of the exhibition.

The photographs of Anne Frank are famous documents worldwide representing the Shoah and were adopted by many artists as a source of inspiration to express their feelings and ideas. There is wide use of Anne Frank’s image in artworks of many artists worldwide. Every artist refers to her image according to his/her cultural perception and artistic style.
Peter Wilhelm: “For the first time, in the exhibition Anne Frank in the Artists Eyes, a large collection of original artworks depicting Anne Frank has been shown. It expose the wide variety of subjects concerning Anne Frank’s image that occupies the artist’s thoughts, ideas and emotions.

Click here to read full Press Release(MMD Newswire) October 5, 2009 — Tuvalu Visualization Project is an art project visualizing information of Tuvalu on Google Earth. This project has been executed as a joint research of NPO Tuvalu Overview and Hidenori Watanave Laboratory @ Tokyo Metropolitan University from September 2008.
This project is composed of three elements.
- Build the Future with 10,000 Tuvaluans – The supporting system for the activity of Tuvalu Overview.
- Tuvalu Mapping – 3300 GPS photographs of Tuvalu on Google Earth.
- Tuvalu on Photosynth – Examples of artwork made by using GPS photographs.
The purpose of project is to disclose actual information about People and Scenery in Tuvalu to the world.

It is said that Tuvalu is exposed to danger of going under water by sea level rising because of global warming. However, we suppose that it is important to understand not only the problem of global warming, but also the real situation of Tuvalu. The Internet is an effective tool for collecting information, but it was difficult to obtain information of the real situation of Tuvalu from the Internet.
Therefore, we produced this project to present the real situation of Tuvalu, to improve the interest in Tuvalu, and to receive feedback from all over the world.

Click here to read full Press Release(MMD Newswire) October 1, 2009 — Famed Spanish artist, Royo, will be returning to Washington, DC for his exclusive gallery opening at P&C Art galleries. Opening receptions with the artist are, Saturday, October 10, 2009, 6:30 to 9pm at the Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia gallery and October 11, 2009, 1 to 4pm at the Washington, DC gallery. Further information can be found on at www.pcart.com.
Over the past 20 years Royo has had a hugely successful career as a fine artist, with a worldwide following of admirers and collectors. He has had major one-man exhibitions, sold-out shows, in his native Spain, throughout Europe, in the U.K., Japan and in the U.S. Among many other distinctions are his commissions from the Spanish Court to paint portraits of the King and Queen of Spain. More than 60 editions of his hand-pulled serigraph editions have sold out over the past 12 years, contributing to the Master’s wide appeal and legendary success.

Now, it appears, that his work is receiving, deservedly, the academic acclaim and acknowledgement along with these commercial successes. He has created throughout his career, along with the beautiful color-saturated paintings which have made him well-known and respected, thematic collections which highlight his depth as an artist, his versatility and his incredible technique. Royo has had museum shows previously, in such diverse venues as The Haggin Museum in California and the Palau de la Musica in Valencia, Spain, with his “Sagittas” collection, a series of works which had a strong narrative content about a Utopian ideal, and a wonderful book and video about that series were created. Another of his thematic series, the boldly colored and sensual “Harem” series was featured in a major, and well-attended public exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland.
Now, his newest creation is a stunning collection of atmospheric and ethereal paintings which he has entitled “Ingravidos”. The collection was unveiled in June, 2006 for the first time at the prestigious Museo Almudin in Valencia, Spain to enormous fanfare. The museum, which was built originally in the Fifteenth Century is a Spanish National Monument. Since the opening of the exhibition for Royo, attendance records have been set. The exhibition has created an explosion of interest in Royo in the museum/academic communities. One of the foremost art critics in Spain, Carlos Gonzales y Lopez, a long-time admirer of Royo, immediately endorsed and championed the collection as significant, and helped to arrange a second museum exhibition, which opened in January, 2007, at the esteemed Museo Diocesa in Barcelona, Spain. The show immediately preceding the “Ingravidos” at the Museo Diocesa featured Andy Warhol. The collection “INGRAVIDOS, has been featured at The Coral Springs Museum of Art, Coral Springs, Florida, from September 7th, 2007 ending January, 2008. Again, this collection received the highest esteem from art critics and set record numbers, both monetarily and for attendance, for the museum.

Project Wrecking Ball
September 25, 2009 – ?
Launch Party Friday September 25, 7-11pm
Varnish Fine Art
77 Natoma Street, San Francisco, CA 94105
Project Wrecking Ball launches at Varnish Fine Art and continues until the wrecking ball swings
San Francisco, CA (MMD Newswire) September 11, 2009 — Witness a select group of over 25 artists as they transform Varnish Fine Art in the coming months, during Project Wrecking Ball. This long-term art project and exhibit is Varnish’s response to the pending eminent domain demolition of their current location at 77 Natoma Street in downtown San Francisco. By continually changing the eviction/demolition date short-notice, the government agency in charge of demo (Transbay Joint Powers Authority) has blocked Varnish’s ability to schedule further art shows as they have since opening 6 ½ years ago. Instead, a fabulous group of invited artists will leave their studios in the Bay Area and beyond to create artwork on-site throughout the main gallery for this ongoing art event. The varied artwork will be created in paint, encaustic and photo-emulsion directly on the brick walls and on panels in addition to metal sculpture and kinetic art installations. Project Wrecking Ball launches with a party on Friday September 25, 7-11pm, and PWB will continue until the wrecking ball swings on Varnish Fine Art—whenever that will be!
The Project Wrecking Ball artists include: Jennybird Alcantara, Beth Bojarski, Vance Cerley, Dave Correia, Kevin Evans, Albert DiCruttalo, Ezra Li Eizmont, Joshua Hagler, Kal Spelletich, Dan Romo, Annie Ownes, Chuck Sperry, Reuben Rude, Michael Page, Sri Zeno Whipple, Brad Isdrab, Stephanie Morgan, Sofia Sharpe, Zoe Ani, Karl Reichley, Pierre Merkl, Winston Smith, Sharon Leong, Rob Racine, Lucien Shapiro, Jon Wayshak, Rob Reger, and more.

A San Francisco agency, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), is eliminating at least 33 small, local businesses, including Varnish Fine Art, and numerous residences in order to demolish all properties and later resell land to fund their project. The TJPA is forcing Varnish, among the first tenants and years before the end of the lease, to vacate its nearly 100 year old building for demolition. This gallery and wine bar will have to vacate 77 Natoma Street, but the business’ owners hope to re-establish Varnish Fine Art at a new location soon.
*High-resolution images available upon request
Gallery Directors Jennifer Rogers and Kerri Stephens opened Varnish Fine Art on April 19, 2003. Beginning with the remains of a brewery built just after the 1906 earthquake, Rogers and Stephens designed and rebuilt the space, including a main gallery, mezzanine gallery and wine bar, combining gallery with community. Varnish Fine Art is a 21+ only venue.
