BrowseAloud gives another voice to the UK Rehabilitation Council!

March 11, 2010 | Author: | Posted in Health

The UK Rehabilitation Council (UKRC) exists to provide an authoritative voice and focal point for anyone with a stake in medical and vocational rehabilitation and to support those who are working to help sick and injured people regain their independence.

As part of their ongoing commitment to reducing accessibility barriers, the UKRC have enabled an innovative new product on their website called BrowseAloud. BrowseAloud helps people with literacy difficulties, dyslexia, mild visual impairments or where English is spoken as a second language.

To see how BrowseAloud works, simply click the BrowseAloud icon on the homepage www.rehabcouncil.org.uk to download the product free of charge.

Brenda Williams, acting CEO, UKRC comments:

“We chose BrowseAloud because we wish to make our website more accessible for people with visual or other communication difficulties. As a rehabilitation organisation we should be seen to be leading in good practice, and revamping our website to conform with accessibility guidelines is consistent with what we’re trying to achieve.”

BrowseAloud is a text-to-speech solution that reads all accessible website content aloud in a high quality human sounding voice which can be altered to suit the individual’s specific needs. As text is read aloud, words are highlighted; a useful tool which aids literacy and comprehension.

A new version of BrowseAloud was recently launched, introducing new features such as a translator, allowing for single word translation between English, French, Spanish and Italian; and a screen masking facility, allowing users to apply colour filters to the screen. Enhancements were also made to existing features such as text magnification, talking dictionary and MP3 Maker.
