British Government To Press Turkey To Be More Constructive In Cyprus Peace Talks

January 22, 2012 | Author: | Posted in Current Affairs

The House of Commons expresses concern over Ankara’s stance in the ongoing negotiations for the problem and calls on the Government to exert pressure so that adopts a more constructive attitude.

In an early day motion that was tabled in the House by Labour MP Alan Meale and was signed so far by 17MPs, the House calls on the Government as a guarantor power, to insist that Turkey adopts a more constructive attitude in negotiations, aimed at establishing a viable, fair and lasting solution to the problem.

Furthermore the House calls on the British Government to insist that as a gesture of goodwill, Turkey should agree to allow refugees from the ghost town of Famagusta and surrounding areas to return to their homes as outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789.

The House expresses its continued concern about the illegal occupation and governance of the northern part of the island of Cyprus by Turkey following its invasion in 1974 and notes that despite international efforts, Turkey refuses to withdraw its military forces, or allow citizens to return to their homes and properties, whilst encouraging wrongful settlement in the area by immigrants whom they allow to exploit land and properties expropriated from their rightful owners without any regard for national cultural heritage.CNA
