BOOKIES SNOWED UNDER WITH FESTIVE BETS – Christmas Countdown

Bookies Paddy Power were today inundated with bets on a white Christmas as Ireland woke up to bitter temperatures and frost covered grounds.

The odds on a single snowflake falling in Dublin on Christmas Day were cut to 9/2 from 5/1 after an avalanche of bets flooded in on the festive market. Further north, the odds on Belfast waking up to a blanket of snow were also cut to 7/2 from 4/1.

Ireland’s last “official” white Christmas was in 2004. This year, a single snowflake registered in Dublin airport on the 25th December could cost the bookie in excess of €75,000.

Meanwhile, with just twenty-five days left until Christmas Day, Paddy Power have launched a whole host of wacky wagers to kick-start the countdown to Christmas Day.

Punters can bet on everything from who will top the charts, with the unknown X Factor winner heavily tipped at 1/7, which soap will receive the most viewers on Christmas Day with Eastenders the 4/9 favourite to trounce Corrie, to what word the Pope might say first during his Christmas speech. Jedward fans can even avail of 10/1 that the Grimes twins will deliver Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message this year!

And with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s daughter Cecelia expecting her first baby this December it’s just 5/2 that she and partner David Keoghan announce their engagement first. In the eligible Irish bachelor stakes, Colin Farrell is the 11/8 favourite to take himself off the market while Apprentice legend Breffny is 10/1 to find love.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “We always witness a flood of bets the minute a bit of ice forms on the ground. It’s been five years since we last saw a white Christmas so punters might just get their wish this year!”
