So, you want to be a model but aren’t blessed with a height of 5ft 8ins without killer heels. What can you do? Don’t despair, there are still plenty of opportunities for male and female models who don’t quite reach the height requirements for fashion modelling through agencies such as Models Direct.

Height is a major issue for catwalk modelling, with 5’ 8” being the standard minimum height required for women and 5’ 10” for men. However, there are some models who go against the norm such as Kate Moss and Devon Aoki, and have had huge success despite being shorter than other models.

Models shouldn’t give up their dream just because they feel they’re too short. There is still plenty of scope for the smaller (average) sized aspiring models. While tall models may be perfect for the catwalk, they might not be as well suited for other types of modelling in the commercial sector.

Clients go to Models Direct with a specification of the kind of model they’re looking for. The agency helps find models for a wide range of different assignments that include photoshoots, film and TV and promotional work. While some of the requests might be for tall models, it is highly likely that they will be looking for people with a more realistic figure.

For those that are still desperate for the catwalk but don’t quite reach the height, there may be change ahead! The current series of America’s Next Top Model features only ‘short’ models of under 5’7”. Is this the first sign of a change of direction concerning height in the high fashion modelling industry?
