A Caring Sharing Christmas
CALGARY, Dec. 27, 2008 – It seems like everybody is talking about social business these days – these are businesses which aim to be financially sustainable, and profitable, in its pursuit of a social, ethical or environmental goal.
They offer a new hope for a caring, sharing society where the focus is equally balanced on business and philanthropy. One such group is Humanity Unites Brilliance that got its start in Los Angeles in early 2008. Today, a part of the group based in Calgary, Canada came together to serve and feed almost 1,000 Homeless people for Christmas.
The Canadian based group inspired Calgary Business and their employees to contribute financially and in kind. The group delivered various necessities like socks, cold weather clothing, Cough lozenges as well as food like Turkeys. On the 24th alone the group delivered 240 lbs of potatoes.
What is most noticeable about this group is the joy with which they serve. The group also served at this same centre, The Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre, for Canadian Thanksgiving feeding over 1,200 people then. This time almost half the volunteers were non-HUB members who were inspired by a mass fax and email campaign.
“We knew that that there were people in Calgary who cared but didn’t know how to participate,” said Allan Marston one of the leaders of Team Destiny in Calgary, “so we figured if we reached them they would respond and that is what happened.”
Instead of the usual 25 volunteers that are needed for such an event the group had more than 50 volunteers.
Calgary businesses also chipped in to help even though they face some uncertain times. Technology companies like Longview Systems donated enough money to buy turkeys to feed over 500 people and PC Corp donated 200 lbs of potatoes. A popular local spa, R&R Wellness also donated gifts and food to feed almost 250 homeless people.
“We set out to inspire Calgarians and we did. And we hope that by getting the word out to others that it will inspire leaders in small communities and big cities everywhere to inspire and lead their communities into action,” said Elisabeth Fayt owner of R&R Wellness Spas and a member of the Canadian faculty of Humanity Unites Brilliance.
HUB Team Destiny meets every week in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg and has plans for weekly events in Vancouver and Toronto.
